- 100 grams lean ground beef– 93% lean or better
- 1 cup chopped tomatoes
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tablespoons minced onion
- 1 tsp. minced garlic
- 1/4 tsp. chili powder
- Pinch of garlic powder
- Pinch of onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Brown ground beef in small frying pan, add onions and garlic. If you choose not to brown the meat, put 1 cup of water into a large soup pot and crumble the ground meat into it. Bring it to a boil and cook for 5 minutes or until you see no pink. Continue to break up the meat with a spoon or metal spatula while cooking. Drain thoroughly, then lay the meat out on a thick pad of paper towels. Using more paper towels, mash the rest of the fat and moisture out of the meat. I usually top the meat layer with paper towels, roll it all up and squeeze hard. You want the meat dry when you put it back into the pan.
Stir in tomatoes and water. Add spices and simmer slowly until liquid is reduced. The longer it cooks, the more tender and flavorful.
Add a little water as needed to prevent the meat from burning.
Serve with chopped onion or tomato and salt and pepper to taste.
